Sick Day Guidelines

When should I keep my student home?

Colds: Student should remain at home with a fever, excessive cough and/or excessive nasal discharge

Chicken Pox: Inform the School Nurse Students must be excluded from school for 5-7 days and until all vesicles are dried and crusted over

Diarrhea: Student must remain at home until diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication

Ear Infections: Contact your physician especially when accompanied with a fever

Eye Infections: Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) needs to be diagnosed and treated by a medical provider. Student may return to school after 24 hours of medical treatment and/or a doctor’s note.

Fever: Student must remain home for a temperature 100F or higher and until fever free without the use of medication for 24 hours

Fifth Disease: Notify the Nurse and pregnant woman who may have had contact with student before rash appeared

Fractures And Surgeries: Notify the Nurse and provide a physician’s note listing physical restrictions needed during the school day.

Hand Foot Mouth Disease (Coxsackie Virus): Student may attend school when there is no fever or weeping lesions

Head Lice: Notify the Nurse

Impetigo: May return to school with a doctor’s note 24 hours after treatment

Mulluscum Contagiousm: Provide a doctor’s note and cover area with clothing or bandage

Nosebleeds: Parents will be notified to pick up child if nosebleed will not cease after 10 minutes

School Injuries: Basic first aid will be administered for minor injuries. Parents will be notified of serious injury or symptoms

Rashes Student may return to school if rash free and/or a medical note stating the rash is not contagious.

Ringworm: Student may return to school with a doctor’s note. Infected site must be covered before entering school

Strep Throat: Student may return 24 hours after antibiotics and fever free

Vomiting: Student must remain at home for 24 hours since last episode of vomiting
